Psychological Assessment

Cognitive and Learning Assessments

Cognitive assessment (sometimes referred to as a learning or cognitive evaluation) explores how a child or young person thinks, learns and processes information. Using standardised cognitive testing, we assess areas such as verbal understanding, non-verbal reasoning, working memory and processing speed, alongside an overall measure of intellectual ability.

Many children present with uneven or “spiky” learning profiles, where strengths in some areas mask difficulties in others. Cognitive assessment helps to identify these patterns, offering insight into learning differences that may not be immediately obvious in the classroom. This understanding allows for targeted recommendations to support learning, reduce frustration and adapt the environment to better meet the child’s needs.

Age range: 6-16yrs.

Learning Disability Assessment

We offer full learning disability assessments in line with NICE guidance. These assessments explore overall intellectual functioning alongside adaptive skills, helping to determine whether a child meets criteria for a learning disability and to identify appropriate levels of support. Findings are carefully formulated and explained, with clear guidance for families, schools and professionals.

Age range: 6-16yrs.

EHCP and School-Based Assessments

Clinical psychology assessments are frequently used to support Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) applications, tribunals and reviews. Our reports provide clear, evidence-based descriptions of a child’s cognitive profile, learning needs and functional impact, alongside practical recommendations to support learning and access to education. Parents and schools often use these reports as part of the evidence base when seeking additional support or provision.

Our assessments are usually in addition to an educational psychology report, where either a more detailed assessment is needed, or that child’s clinical and emotional needs require further assessment and understanding.

All assessments integrate standardised testing with clinical formulation, ensuring that results are understood within the context of the child’s development, emotional wellbeing and environment. Reports are written in clear, accessible language and include tailored recommendations to guide support at home and in school or to support the local authority in their decision making.
